TULIP VASE

Tulip Vase is a dialogue between tradition and technology, shaped by both the hand and the algorithm. Drawing on my cultural heritage and the stylized tulip motifs of the late Ottoman period, the form reinterprets these historical patterns through a contemporary lens. This handcrafted porcelain piece was developed using AI as a tool for exploration, allowing digital suggestions to inform a culturally rooted design while remaining grounded in the tactile process of clay.

This piece reflects on how our tools shape the way we create and, in turn, how we define craftsmanship itself. AI introduced possibilities for making, yet the essence of the vase remains deeply human. As I embrace the result, I also question our shifting habits, rituals, and methods of production. It is an experiment in balancing new tools with traditional making, embracing both the familiar and the unknown.

Design is Human

Isola Design Festival 2025 reshapes the role of humanity-driven design

“Design is Human” calls for a deep reflection on the relationship between people and design, to consider how design choices shape our lives, communities, and the environment. True design has to begin with a focus on the human experience and every decision and innovation should be guided by empathy, understanding, and respect for the diverse needs of all people...”

PELIN ALKAN

My journey with ceramics started back home in Turkey, where I discovered ancient pottery techniques during my travels to archaeological sites as well as the studios of master potters across the country. Since 2020, I have been actively involved in ceramics, exploring the incorporation of AI and digital production techniques into my creative process. Drawing from my background as a designer, I have been able to reinterpret this traditional craft with a curiosity to explore new methods and techniques made possible by digital tools.
